I am a 37 year old Male.  I have been married now for over 15 years.  I have three kids, all boys.  My boys ages are 14, 11 and 7.  I have always enjoyed running and my wife is slowly being converted.   While I was going through college I didn't do much running so I am having to teach my leg how to run fast again.

I ran ten miles in 1:23:34,  In the ten mile there was a 4 mile section that climbed 1000 feet.  I ran during the heat of the day and I pushed to hard yesturday.  My legs where sor the hollow time.  Yesturday should of been a slow recovery day from the speed work out, then today I planned a hard hill day.  Didn't push as hard as I wanted.  I don't think it would of been smart I don't want to hurt myself.  My question is should I cut this workout short.

From mattrow on Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 22:57:12

I am not wandering around SEATAC. When I was walking around the airport, my walk looked more like a 80 year olds walk. I have added the race report. I have been having trouble describing the relay. The relay was behond discription.

I am starting to think the exercise gods don't like me.  I went out for a hour and a half bike ride.  About ten minutes into my bike ride, I come to a family trying to herd three pigs down the road.  I don't want scair the pigs and cause to much problems so I wait until there is good openning to go by.  I continue my bike ride.  After about forty five minutes of hard bike riding I turn back.  By now it is getting dark.  As I am riding back it starts to get harder and harder to ride the bike.  When I get about 3/4 of a mile back to my house I am in one of the lowest gears of the bike.  I go to stand up, too push hard, and I feel the front rim hit the road.  My tire is flat.  I get off my bike and start to push my bike home.  I can't believe how hard it is just to push my bike.  I go to spin my back tire and I have a brake that is rubbing.

The hole trip took two hours, I don't think I went very far but I am tired.  I might of gone 15 to 20 miles.

From mattrow on Tue, Aug 05, 2008 at 14:43:26

This when I need to know my ananamy (and spelling) better. I could say I pulled groin musle, but I don't think that is correct. The location is more in the front portion of the leg.

I am not pushing off on the leg correctly.

Hey! Thanks for the comment, I never knew about the top of Utah 1/2 marathon, but I am scared to even try to run that far before october. I was never really fast at running and I was really nervous for the Moab run! Is there any good places to run around Logan area or in the canyon that I should know about? Thanks!

From mattrow on Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 09:32:28

I understand about being scared about running a 1/2 marathon. I ran my first half Marathon in May. I was training for the Wasatch Back when I did. It turned out to be a great race. I am just as nervious about running the Top of Utah Marathon this September. I am hoping my legs will heal be then.

There is some good places to run in logan. When I was a student I used run along the first dam road. I didn't run much while I went to school. Between School, a full time Job, and having a wife and kid, my days were full. When I did get a chance to go running it sure was nice.

For a good list of routes you might want to get a hold of the following blog members.

I know there are a few others that live in Cache valley. They should have alot more courses they run. You don't have to worry about running as fast as they do to run one of there courses.

I ran tenty miles for the first time in my live today.

I ran with a group of people from work.  The Course, we started at mile three of the top of utah marathon.  We ran up to the start.  The first three miles took about 24:30 were we ran second mile faster than the first and the third faster than the second.

At the start we got a drink then turn around.

I was running with two other runners at the six mile mark our time was 45 minutes.

After getting a drink and taking some gue we continued.

The other two runners pulled away either between mile 6 an 9 or 9 and 12.

I end up running the last 8 miles by myself. At mile 15 which was the farthest I have run so far my time was about 1:53.  Which was 4 minutes faster than I have ever before.

I ended up running the 20 miles in 2:35 I averaged a 7:45 mile.

The last five miles I averaged a 8:24.  I wish I didn't slow down that much, but I was able complete the run without any set backs.

I ran 11.5 to 12 miles in 1:34:57.

I ran about a mile to a 10 K course that I know.  In fact this saturday they will have a race on it (Peach days 10K)  The course is very hilly I ran the course in 46:40.   Mile 3 to 4 was in about 7 minutes.  When I ran a 5K course and ran home.  I don't remember the time for the 5K.  The 5K is also very hilly, infact it has a .25 mile hill that is at least 6 to 7 percent grade.  Both course there is not a flat part on the course.

The last part of the run my legs were tired.  I am training for the top of Utah Marathon and trying to decide if I should run the Peach Day 10 this Saturday.  I am coming back from an injury so I don't want any set backs.

The Brigham City Peach Days 10K starts at 9:00 o’clock so I was able to sleep in a little.

Got up at 6:30 and ate a little

At 8:00 got registered

Warmed up and stretched.

I wanted to start the race conservatively and feel things out

Ran the first mine in 6:20.  At these point I was in about 25th - 30th place

My split for the second mile was 13:10 about.  I don't have a watch that keep lap times so all times are from memory

The split for the third mile was about 19:30.  The thee mile marker is located at the highest place in the course.  At this point I was in 20th place.

The split for the forth mile was about 26:??.  This is a fun part of the course there is two hills but the mile actually down hill.

The split at mile 5 mile was about 33:??.  Mile 5 is almost all downhill the only part that is not is the last three blocks.

The last mile and a half is up a gradual hill about a 2 to 3 percent grade.

Finished in 42:19 which is 40+ seconds faster than last year.  This is the only 10K I have run so it is a new PR.  I need to run other 10K to determine how it rates.  I would like to brake 40 minutes some day.

From cody on Sun, Sep 07, 2008 at 22:47:27

Nice Job Matt. You definitely have many sub 40 min 10K's in you. I saw that in Washington. This is still a good time on a non-aided course. Keep the mileage as high as you can without injuries and chunks of time will come off your PR.

Check out the First Dam Run in Logan in November. Mild hills but plenty fast. But if you want fast run Des News 10K. There isn't a faster 10K in Utah.

From Dale on Mon, Sep 08, 2008 at 10:15:23

Congrats on the PR. Many more to come, for sure. You just need to find that gear you used on your last Ragnar leg where you somehow warped through the last couple of miles to appear at the exchange! Seriously, you're going to keep getting faster quickly so keep up the good training.

0.0026.200.000.0026.20

I had two goals coming into the Marathon 1) Finish, 2)Finish in under 3:30.

This is my first marathon so the first goal of finishing is diffidently the more important of the two goals.  I was able to achieve the first goal.  I finished in 3:34:07 so I just missed on the second goal.

At the starting line I was not sure what to expect, but I lined up were people planning to run 3:30 should.  When the gun went off it took about 30 seconds to get to the starting line.  I did start my watch when I crossed the starting line.   I don’t have a very good watch so all splits are from memory.  My watch doesn’t remember any splits.  When I crossed the 1 mile marker and saw 7:11 I knew I was running too fast so I tried to slow down, but it is hard to slow down when you are running down hill with a lot of runners by you.  I felt pretty good so I continued to run, just concentrating on running tangents.  At mile 7 I used a GU that I had with me.  When I got to mile 8 and saw 60 minutes almost exactly I was pretty happy, but I don’t know what happed mile 9,10 and 11 I didn’t try to speed up but I ran the three mile at an average pace of 7:15.  When I got to the half way mile marker I know I had run the first half of the marathon too fast.  I still felt OK however I could feel my calf’s were starting be sore.  At mile 13 I used a GU.    Miles 13 though 20 I felt OK I could tell I was slowing down some and I could feel parts of my legs.  When I got to mile 20 and saw 1:35:?? I felt like I was going too be able to run the last 6.2 in 55 minutes.   During mile 20 I was trying to pass a few of the runners in front of me.  I felt ok.  Mile 21 was about the same.  Mile 22 took forever.  For some reason I lost track of miles and started to think I was on mile 23.  When I crossed the mile 23 marker it was not good.  Miles 23,24 and 25 I was just running.  I knew I was slowing down but I didn’t feel that bad I just could get my legs to move any faster.  The last 1.2 miles was agony.  I could feel every muscle and joint.  The only thing that kept me running is knowing if I stopped I would not be able to start again.  I hobbled through the finished line in 3:34:07.  The clock reading 3:34:40 something, at that point I didn’t care who passed me you what my time was just that I finished.

Would I do it again? Yes I would do some things differently.   1) Train better before I run the next one I would like to train about 60 to 70 miles a week.  2) Add more long runs to my training.  Before the marathon the farthest I had run is 20 miles and that was 3 weeks before the relay.    My second longest run is 15.2 miles and the 15 mile runs were more than 2 months ago.  3) Race the first half more conservatively. 4) Get different shoes.  The tread on the bottom of the shoe feels like I have a rock stuck in the tread.  I have a blister on the bottom of my foot.   I don’t like the shoes lean.

Splits I can remember and get off of chip time

Mile 1    7:11

Mile 2    14:24

Mile 3    22:??

Mile 6    43:30

Mile 8    60:00

Mile 9 1:07:11

Mile 10 1:14:24

Mile 11 1:22:??

Half split 137:43

Mile 15 1:54:??

Mile 20 2:35:02

Finish 3:34:07

From Jon on Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 22:43:55

Nice job, especially for your first marathon. Only missing your goal by less than 5 minutes is real, real good for your first time. Remember the 2 things I told you- don't go out too fast and that you will immediately start thinking of how to do it better next time? Looks like both came to pass :) Although most people don't immediately write what they would do different.

You should be proud of how you did. And your next one will be even better!

This is a response to your comments on my run yesterday.

Yep - I live few block north of the Temple. The 1st Dam 10K goes right past my house. Do you know which weekend that race is? Your race schedule looks a lot like mine, though I haven't decided between the Bear Lake Marathon (or 1/2) and the Ragner Relay - I think they're just a week apart. Also, I'm considering doing "Running From and Angel" in Boulder City Nevada on January 3rd.

From mattrow on Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 12:17:15

I used to live in Logan while I attended USU.

The first Dam run is on November 1, I used to love running down in the island.

I have not finialized my racing schedule for next year. I don't think I will by running the Boulder city race.

Some of the other race I will probly run is

Wheat and Bean Day sun first part of August

Peach days 10K saturday after labor day

Some local 4th of July race

I need to pick up one or two half marathons.

I am trying to figure out racing and training schedule to give me a good chance of qualifing for Boston.

I was looking at your times and is Ogden harder than top of Utah or was your training better.

From Jason McK on Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 12:39:52

Actually, I only started training for a marathon after the TOU last year. I saw the results in the paper and decided that this year I wanted to finish it. So I started training the day after the results were printed. As I researched more, I realized that 1 year was too long to wait to run a marathon, so I signed up for Ogden. I think the TOU is probably a little easier, but the last half of Ogden seemed much easier than the last half of TOU. As I came down the canyon (in Ogden) when somebody passed me, I worked to not let them get out of my sight. I think after mile 17, less than 5 people passed me and I passed a bunch of people. My problem at TOU was that I pushed too hard the first 16 miles (averaging 7:18 per mile.) When people passed me in the last 9 miles of TOU, I tried hard to care, but it didn't really bother me.

I really enjoyed the Ogden Marathon but I was more prepared for TOU.

Sorry - long answer...

Where is Wheat and Bean days?

From mattrow on Wed, Oct 01, 2008 at 09:33:14

The What and Bean Day is in Tremonton or Garland. I have never run the race, but I have been told that they put on a good race. So it is a good local race the first part of August. At the Wheat and Bean days you can run either a 5K or 10K similar to first Dam race.

From Jason McK on Wed, Oct 01, 2008 at 18:46:52

Sounds like a fun one - with some August heat. The only race I've done in July or August was the TOU half this year...

After running with my son the first lap I ran the last lap in 13:10.  The race was pretty small so It was a good race for my sons first race.  I took third in my age group and won a Pie.  OK I took third out of three, but I still got a pumpkin pie.
